For a Light Rail trip in Tuen Mun, Yuen Long or Tin Shui Wai, save the name of the stop and the direction of travel. With Octopus, validate before boarding and again at the destination. With a Light Rail single ticket, check its direction and fare zone and keep it for inspection. Complete the one-way journey within two hours.
Choose the interchange from the last stop backwards
Light Rail serves the north-western New Territories. The MTR interchange table lists four Tuen Ma Line stations with Light Rail connections: Yuen Long, Tin Shui Wai, Siu Hong and Tuen Mun. Start with the name of your intended Light Rail stop and work back to a suitable interchange. For example, routes 610, 614 and 615 link Yuen Long with Tuen Mun Ferry Pier, but serve different stops along the way. For an intermediate stop check both the route number and the destination displayed on the vehicle.
Ask for a more precise meeting point if someone says simply “Tuen Mun”. Tuen Mun Station on the Tuen Ma Line and the Light Rail stop at Tuen Mun Ferry Pier are a ride apart. From Kowloon, a shopping centre next to the railway station may need only the Tuen Ma Line and a walk. An address closer to the pier calls for a different final leg.
Validate before approaching the train
At the designated entrance to the open platform, look for the Entry Fare Processor. Tap the Octopus you plan to use throughout the journey and read the response on the display before waiting for the train. If the reader does not confirm the tap, resolve it before boarding. There is no onboard payment step to complete this validation for you.

First-time riders can mistake an enquiry machine for an entry or exit processor. That was a common difficulty in an earlier HK01 report on the Light Rail. Read the function marked on the machine in front of you. Older photographs show where readers were positioned, while MTR's current ticket guidance sets out the validation rules. Staff may check tickets on the platform or aboard the train.

Pick the ticket for the journey you will actually make
| Ticket | Before boarding | At the destination |
|---|---|---|
| Octopus | Validate at the entry processor and check the balance | Tap the same card at the exit processor |
| Light Rail single ticket | Buy for the correct direction and fare zone at the machine | Keep the ticket for inspection and buy another for the return |

Octopus is a convenient starting point if you already have one and will be continuing on the Tuen Ma Line. For a one-off ride without Octopus, find your destination on the fare-zone diagram at the ticket machine before choosing the ticket. To check the price on a phone, choose the Light Rail row on the MTR single-ticket fare chart page. Budget for any onward Tuen Ma Line ride as well. A family should check each rider's own ticket category and eligibility before applying a concession to the total.

Follow a one-way path when changing routes
One validated Octopus journey or single ticket covers travel in one direction without repeating a stop. Before setting out, identify the interchange shared by your two routes and the destination to look for on the next train. Where the platform change involves going into the street, use the marked pedestrian access and follow signs. Show staff the stop and route numbers if the direction is unclear.
The rule matters on circular routes such as 705 and 706. Suppose you start near Tin Shui Wai, miss the stop you wanted, then stay on to make another circuit. That can take you through the same stop again. Two hours is the validity limit for one journey, not a period of unlimited riding. For a return leg or another passage through the same stop on a circular route, MTR requires fresh Octopus validation or another appropriate ticket. If you leave to explore a neighbourhood, complete the first trip and start a new one when you return.
Finish the Light Rail leg before entering the Tuen Ma Line
At the final Light Rail stop, tap your Octopus at the Exit Fare Processor and check the display. If you are transferring, complete that step first, then use the same card to enter the Tuen Ma Line station. Treat each validation as a deliberate step, particularly if a group is walking ahead to the next station.

There are conditions for the interchange concession. MTR's published terms require a positive Octopus balance. For an adult Octopus the Light Rail journey must qualify at HK$5.40 or less, and the next entry validation must take place within 30 minutes of exit validation. Other fare categories have their own conditions. HK$5.40 is a threshold for this offer. Look up the actual fare for the stops you intend to use. If you plan to sit down for a meal between legs, budget for the two trips separately.
For an evening trip, look up the way home too
The Light Rail timetable is organised by route. Switch direction to check the return and watch for short workings and special services. For a late connection, check both the Light Rail and the onward Tuen Ma Line service, allowing time to walk between them. MTR advises confirming precise times at a Light Rail stop on the day of travel.
Ordinary luggage is limited to one piece per passenger unless authorised. Its combined length, width and height must be at most 170 cm, with no side longer than 130 cm. Measuring a wheeled case with its handles and wheels included gives a practical idea of what you will have to move between platforms. Ask MTR about the specific station access if a step-free path is essential, particularly for a street-level transfer. For the double-deck tram on Hong Kong Island, see the Hong Kong Tramways guide.
Your pre-journey checklist
- Save the stop, route number, direction and return interchange.
- Validate Octopus at entry and use the same card at the final exit.
- Check a single ticket's direction and zone and keep it for inspection.
- Arrange fresh validation or a new ticket for a return, repeated stop or later trip.
- Check onward connections, luggage and any step-free access needs.

Make it your journey
For a day in the north-western New Territories, identify the last Light Rail stop first. Then add the time from the hotel to your interchange and the final walk to your destination.
