The essentials

Frequent Visitor e-Channel enrolment provides eligible travellers with self-service immigration clearance; it does not replace a passport, visa or permission to enter. Go Hong Kong mobile enrolment requires a designated electronic travel document and at least two Hong Kong airport visits in the preceding 24 months. In-person enrolment has additional eligibility routes. Identify your route before applying and activating the record.

Permission to visit and permission to use an e-Channel differ

Visa-free nationality, a valid visa or completion of another entry requirement does not automatically mean that you have enrolled for the Frequent Visitor e-Channel service. Nor does approved enrolment create visa-free entitlement, extend a permitted stay or guarantee admission on every visit. This guide is for adult frequent visitors holding overseas travel documents. Hong Kong residents, Mainland visitors and passport holders covered by separate reciprocal arrangements should consult the rules for their own category.

An HK01 contributed commentary in September 2026 discussed advance Go Hong Kong enrolment as one way to improve the arrival experience. That is a media viewpoint, not evidence of eligibility or a measured clearance-time guarantee. The conditions below come from Immigration Department guidance checked on 21 October 2026; the older “three visits in 12 months” threshold is not used. Read the media discussion and the official Frequent Visitors page separately.

General enrolment: shared conditions plus one of four routes

The published common requirements are to be 18 or older, hold a valid travel document and, where applicable, a valid multiple-visit visa, and have no adverse record in Hong Kong. In addition, meet one of the following four criteria:

Eligibility routeWhat to check
Previous visitsAt least two visits to Hong Kong through Hong Kong International Airport in the preceding 24 months at enrolment
HKSAR Travel PassA valid HKSAR Travel Pass, not an ordinary ticket or travel itinerary
APEC Business Travel CardA valid card showing HKG on the reverse
Participating airline frequent-flyer membershipValid membership of an airline participating in the arrangement; verify with that airline

Two visits, 24 months and Hong Kong International Airport describe one eligibility route. Do not substitute visits through any border crossing, or make that route the only condition for every in-person applicant. Applicants using a qualifying pass, card or membership must still meet the common requirements. The Department retains discretion over enrolment; satisfying the listed criteria is not an assurance of approval.

The official page also links separate reciprocal arrangements for holders of passports from Korea, Singapore, Germany, Australia and Thailand. If one applies to you, read its own conditions. Do not combine a reciprocal scheme, ordinary Frequent Visitor enrolment and residents' contactless clearance into a single service.

Go Hong Kong mobile enrolment has narrower conditions

The mobile route does not reproduce every in-person eligibility route. The official FAQ requires applicants to be at least 18, have no adverse Hong Kong record, hold a valid electronic travel document issued by a country designated by the Department and a multiple-visit visa where applicable, and have made at least two Hong Kong airport visits in the preceding 24 months at enrolment.

A passport chip alone does not establish that the document is designated. Check the current Go Hong Kong document-country list through the official page. Holding an APEC card, Travel Pass or qualifying airline membership without meeting the mobile route's airport-visit requirement should not be treated as sufficient for mobile enrolment.

The application asks for an expected arrival date within the next three months and an email address, followed by scanning the document, reading its chip and facial recognition. Use the Department's official mobile-app page to reach the download channels. Distinguish Go Hong Kong from the Hong Kong e-Channel app primarily described there for eligible Hong Kong residents. Do not provide document information through an unfamiliar link claiming to activate the service for you.

Under normal circumstances, the Department says it completes processing within 24 hours of receiving an application and sends the result through the app and email. Further verification can take longer; applications are prioritised by planned arrival date. This is not a guarantee of approval before landing. Do not leave enrolment until boarding and make it your only arrival plan. Until approved, follow your existing entry entitlement and instructions at the control point.

Approval must be followed by entry by the declared date

After Go Hong Kong approval, enter Hong Kong on or before the expected arrival date provided to activate the record; the official guidance says approved visitors may use an e-Channel for self-service clearance. If you do not enter by that date, the record is automatically invalidated and re-enrolment is required. Approval is not a place that can be held indefinitely for a later trip.

For example, if you declared 20 November but postpone arrival to 22 November after approval, do not assume the original record remains usable. Check its status in the app before travelling and follow the official re-enrolment procedure. This hypothetical example explains the deadline; it does not create an additional grace period.

An enrolment record is valid for two years. Each Hong Kong entry extends it by two years from that entry date, but only until the earlier expiry of the enrolled travel document or visa. A two-year enrolment record does not permit a two-year stay. The conditions and limit of stay given on each actual admission remain separate.

Expected arrival date, timely activation and enrolment-record validity
The expected arrival must be within the next three months; enter by that date after approval to activate. Record validity runs two years from each entry, capped by enrolled document or visa expiry; this does not authorise a two-year stay.HONGKONGGO · IllustrationView full-size image

Where to enrol in person, and what to bring

Eligible visitors who are not using mobile enrolment can enrol free at an Enrolment Office. The current official page lists these locations and hours; check for temporary arrangements before making a special journey.

OfficeLocation and published hours
Immigration Headquarters7/F, Administration Tower, 61 Po Yap Road, Tseung Kwan O; Monday–Friday 08:45–17:00, closed Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays
Hong Kong International AirportNorth and South arrival halls, Terminal 1; daily 07:30–23:00, after arrival immigration counters and before baggage reclaim

The airport offices are not walk-in desks in the public meeting hall. If planning to enrol on arrival, look for them after immigration and before collecting bags; do not exit to the public area and expect to return. If it is inconvenient at that point, consider the Headquarters or mobile route according to your eligibility, without jeopardising a connection or onward transport.

Bring the valid travel document you intend to enrol, any applicable multiple-visit visa, and the valid Travel Pass, APEC card or participating airline membership evidence required for your chosen route. Electronic-document enrolment involves electronic consent and a facial image; non-electronic documents also involve fingerprints. If the document, eligibility route or required evidence is unclear, ask the Department instead of relying on how a friend enrolled previously.

First use, and what happens after a passport change

Present the enrolled travel document and follow the gate and staff instructions. The official process distinguishes electronic documents enrolled on or after 27 February 2026, which use facial recognition, from non-electronic documents and electronic documents enrolled before that date, which use the relevant fingerprint-verification process. Photographs of older channels are not current operating instructions.

On arrival, collect and keep the landing slip showing your conditions and limit of stay. Children and companions who are not enrolled must follow the channel appropriate to their own eligibility; one enrolled adult does not make the whole family eligible for the same lane. If the gate does not work or the record is unclear, ask staff for help rather than trying somebody else's document or switching documents at random.

After a passport, visa or other enrolment-information change, update the record at an Enrolment Office or through Go Hong Kong. An invalidated record requires re-enrolment. The Department also provides self-service updating facilities under specific conditions, but these are not automatically available for every passport or original enrolment route. Checking document expiry, app status and entry entitlement before travel is more useful than remembering only the two-year headline.

Your pre-journey checklist

  • Confirm that Frequent Visitor enrolment is a clearance service, not a visa or entry permit.
  • Meet the common requirements and one of the four general eligibility routes.
  • For Go Hong Kong, separately check the designated electronic document and two airport visits requirement.
  • Allow processing time and record the expected arrival and activation deadline.
  • Check the office, hours and evidence; airport enrolment offices are before baggage reclaim.
  • Update changed documents and retain the conditions and limit of stay for each admission.

Make it your journey

If entry entitlement is still unresolved, start with Hong Kong and Macao entry and re-entry preparation . Travellers merely connecting at the airport should read airside transit versus entering to collect bags . For a vehicle after arrival, request a transfer quote with your flight, destination, passengers and luggage; e-Channel enrolment cannot guarantee a fixed time out of immigration.
