For emergency medical help in Macau, call 999, 110 or 112, explain your location and follow the instructions. For non-emergency care, contact a hospital or health centre to check that day’s arrangements. Ask about charges for your actual non-resident status; a Macau resident’s subsidy does not automatically apply to a visitor. Let a companion handle payment or insurance questions without delaying help.
Save the location with the emergency numbers
This guide covers contacts, registration and paperwork for short-term non-resident visitors. It does not assess symptoms or replace professional triage. Information was checked on 30 October 2026. The Macao Government Tourism Office emergency page lists 999, 110 and 112. In an emergency, explain what has happened and follow the call handler’s directions; do not first wait for a hotel, driver or insurer to reply.
Save your accommodation’s full address, phone number and Chinese and English or Portuguese names before travelling. Explain whether you are on Macau Peninsula, Taipa or Coloane, then give the floor, room or a recognisable nearby location. At a hotel, a companion can ask reception for the precise address and help communicating it. Reception staff can help with location information, but cannot guarantee clinical triage or admission.
A data-only travel eSIM is not an ordinary voice-call service. Establish how your phone can make calls beforehand. When help is needed, ask someone nearby or reception to assist immediately if necessary. Do not delay assistance to return for a printed insurance policy, and do not treat a cross-border private car as an ambulance.

For non-emergency care, check the provider and today’s service
The Tourism Office’s health information says visitors can attend hospitals or health centres; for non-emergencies, centres are available on the peninsula, Taipa and Coloane. These three starting points help you make enquiries. Medical professionals should determine what is appropriate for the actual situation.
| Enquiry starting point | Verified location or contact | Ask before attending |
|---|---|---|
| Conde S. Januário General Hospital, commonly called the hilltop hospital | Estrada do Visconde de S. Januário, Macau Peninsula; +853 2831 3731; emergency service 24 hours | Relevant entrance, non-resident registration and payment arrangements |
| Macao Union Medical Center | Avenida do Hospital das Ilhas, Cotai; +853 8392 2211 (patient-service enquiries, not emergency dispatch) | Current emergency entrance, services and this centre’s charges |
| Tap Seac Health Centre | Avenida do Conselheiro Ferreira de Almeida, Macau Peninsula; +853 2852 2232 | Today’s hours, visitor registration, documents and language assistance |
Health centres are not all open around the clock, and a specialist outpatient service does not necessarily accept walk-ins. Say that you are a short-term visitor, where you are and which language you use. Ask about the service needed, any appointment and the correct entrance. A shortened hospital name in a map app is not enough to identify the right facility.

Account for the 2026 change to the islands emergency service
The Medical Center’s government announcement states that it took over the emergency station previously run by Conde S. Januário General Hospital from 28 January 2026, with 24-hour clinical, imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services. An older guide’s operator name may therefore differ from the current one. Do not assume the former name means identical charges still apply.
A Macau Daily Times report of 8 June 2026 discussed the phased expansion of ambulance reception coverage. It is a reason to check current services, not an instruction for visitors to choose an ambulance’s receiving hospital. Leave ambulance arrangements and clinical triage to the relevant professionals.
Public holidays make the distinction between emergency and other services particularly important. At this check, the centre had announced that specified outpatient and imaging services would close for the 2 November All Souls’ Day holiday, while emergency, inpatient and haemodialysis services would continue as usual. That is a notice for one date, not a permanent holiday timetable. Check the dated holiday announcement and newer notices before setting out.

Explain your visitor status when registering
The Health Bureau’s emergency-service procedure lists identification, a registration card commonly known as a gold card, and any applicable healthcare-benefit documents. A first-time visitor without a local card should explain their short-term visitor status and ask about first-visit registration.
Bring your actual passport or travel document, a Macau contact number and relevant existing records when readily available. The receiving provider can clarify whether an entry record is needed, how to open a first-visit record and what may be supplied later. Eligibility for a charging category depends on your own status and applicable evidence.
State your preferred language and ask what assistance is available. Macau’s bilingual signs do not establish that every department and shift provides the same language support. The Tourism Office’s 24-hour hotline, +853 2833 3000, offers Cantonese, Mandarin, English, Portuguese and Japanese for general visitor information. It is not a medical-diagnosis or emergency-dispatch line.

A consultation charge is not the whole bill
Conde S. Januário’s service page separates consultation charges from tests, drugs, treatment and surgery, and distinguishes Macau residents, non-resident workers and other non-local residents. The Medical Center’s emergency announcement uses its own three-tier charging arrangements, with non-Macau residents paying the approved charges in full. A figure for one item at one hospital cannot establish another hospital’s price or your total bill.
Ask which charging category applies, what a stated amount includes, whether tests or medicines are additional, which payment methods are accepted, and whether advance payment and later reconciliation are required. If you want direct settlement through insurance, confirm it separately with both the provider and insurer. Having travel insurance does not establish that you will not have to pay first.
The emergency procedure’s statement that registration can generally be completed within ten minutes concerns registration administration. It is not a promise to see a doctor, or finish treatment, in ten minutes. The hospital determines clinical priority and treatment order; do not use this guide to select or change emergency departments based on an assumed shorter wait.
Keep financial and follow-up papers separately
As a practical preparation, keep payment receipts, itemised cost information and documents supplied after the consultation in separate groups. Ask whether the provider can supply anything your insurer specifically requests, how to obtain it later and whether there is a separate charge. Check coverage, any prior-contact requirement, translations and submission deadlines directly with your insurer. This guide cannot establish that a claim will be paid.
If the visit affects departure, a companion can contact the hotel, airline or other transport provider to check the booking’s change conditions. Ask which evidence that provider needs before requesting an appropriate document from the healthcare institution. Ask the treating professionals whether continuing the journey is suitable; a payment receipt alone cannot answer that question.

Your pre-journey checklist
- Keep the accommodation’s precise name and address with emergency numbers; seek help first in an emergency.
- For non-emergency care, confirm current service, visitor registration, entrance and language assistance.
- Distinguish Conde S. Januário from the Medical Center and check the relevant charging arrangements.
- Explain your actual status and bring readily available documents without delaying assistance to find them.
- Keep financial and care records separately; confirm insurance, travel changes and medical decisions with the appropriate professionals.

Make it your journey
Save assistance numbers, your accommodation address and your insurer’s contact details offline. When care is needed, let the appropriate service take over while a companion helps with the remaining travel arrangements.
