Macau's LRT can connect Taipa Ferry Terminal, the airport, Cotai and Barra, but it does not reach every visitor attraction. Check the walk from your destination station before choosing a route, then identify any change at Lotus or Union Hospital. For a day centred on Senado Square, the Ruins of St Paul's or Coloane Village, compare the complete journey with walking, a direct bus or a taxi.
Start with the operating network, not a future map
As checked on 17 October 2026, the operator lists three operating lines: Taipa, Hengqin and Seac Pai Van. The East Line is still shown as under construction. HK01 reported proposed extensions towards areas including Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro in January 2026. A station appearing in a planning story is not necessarily a station you can use today. Use the operator's current network page to plan a journey, rather than relying on a news graphic.
The Taipa Line runs between Barra and Taipa Ferry Terminal, serving stations including Ocean, Pai Kok, Cotai West, Lotus, Union Hospital, Cotai East, MUST and Airport. Change at Lotus for the Hengqin Line or Union Hospital for the Seac Pai Van Line. These interchange names are more useful than simply saying that you want to go to Hengqin: Taipa Line trains do not all run through to Hengqin.

Choose the route by its first and last walking sections
| Journey | How the LRT fits | Check before choosing it |
|---|---|---|
| Taipa Ferry Terminal or Macau Airport to Cotai | Start at the terminal or airport station and identify the station closest to your destination | The actual hotel entrance, luggage and outdoor walk; compare a hotel shuttle |
| Cotai to the Barra area | Take the Taipa Line to Barra and continue locally on foot | Barra is not the Ruins of St Paul's; allow another connection for central or northern parts of the peninsula |
| Macau to Hengqin Port | Reach Lotus, then change to the Hengqin Line | Separate the train journey from border clearance; mainland entry documents still matter |
| Seac Pai Van neighbourhood | Change at Union Hospital | Seac Pai Van station and Coloane Village are different destinations |
Large hotel complexes can have entrances a long way from the point shown on a general map. Locate the entrance you will actually use. Compare shuttle waiting and walking with LRT waiting, interchange walking and the walk outside the station. The minutes spent on the train are only one part of the journey. A rail experience is not a good reason to send a family with heavy cases on an avoidable walk.
Hengqin station provides a port connection; an LRT ticket does not grant permission to enter mainland China. Check your travel document, any required visa or permit, and border procedures separately. If your plan is simply to explore Macau, riding to the end of a branch should not accidentally turn into an unplanned border crossing.
Fares depend on the charging count
The general ticket page gives the bands below, checked on 17 October 2026. All amounts are Macau patacas per person for a single journey. A general Macau Pass can be tapped directly at the gates and receives the same fare discount as a general LRT Card.
| Stations counted for the fare | Adult single-journey ticket | General LRT Card or general Macau Pass |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 3 | MOP 6 | MOP 3 |
| 4–6 | MOP 8 | MOP 4 |
| 7–9 | MOP 10 | MOP 5 |
| 10–12 | MOP 12 | MOP 6 |
Do not simply count circles on a map. Each of the Barra–Ocean and Lotus–Hengqin sea crossings counts as two stations for fare purposes. Union Hospital has a further condition: it is counted when the journey starts or ends at Union Hospital or Seac Pai Van, but otherwise is excluded from the charging count. Enter your real origin and destination into the operator's fare enquiry rather than estimating the price from physical distance.

For only one or two rides, a discounted electronic fare does not automatically make buying a new card worthwhile. An LRT Card itself costs MOP 30; stored value, the number of journeys and any remaining balance are separate considerations. If you already have a general Macau Pass, check its balance first. This guide does not treat temporary top-up bonuses as a discount every visitor is certain to receive.
At the station: ticket, gate and direction
- Confirm your destination and any interchange, then buy the appropriate ticket at a vending machine or Customer Service Center. The single-journey ticket is a token, valid on its day of issue. Keep it until you have completed your exit.
- Follow the gate instructions for the token, or use the same valid Macau Pass or LRT Card to enter and exit. Payment methods accepted when buying a ticket do not mean every bank card can be tapped directly at a gate.
- Read the platform's destination and interchange signs. Let passengers leave before boarding, and follow the interchange signs rather than guessing a line from the train's colour.
- Leave the paid area before having food or drink. If a ticket is lost, a gate fails or an exit is unclear, ask a member of staff rather than following another passenger through a gate.
The payment facilities differ. Customer Service Centers accept cash, credit cards, Simple Pay, Alipay and WeChat Pay. Ticket vending machines accept cash and LRT Cards; add-value machines accept cash only. Both kinds of machine take Macau patacas for cash payments. Customer Service Centers accept MOP, HKD and RMB at 1:1, give change in MOP, and have denomination restrictions. Having patacas ready, or checking with the counter first, is easier than repeatedly trying Hong Kong coins at a machine. Operator's ticketing conditions

Check children and senior travellers separately
The operator's concessionary single tickets cover children under 12, people aged 65 or over and eligible disabled passengers without an electronic concessionary card. The fares are MOP 3, 4, 5 or 6 by charging band. Carry valid evidence of eligibility. Turning 65 as a visitor does not automatically give you the free travel available through the Macau resident senior card scheme.
There is a separate free-travel rule: a child shorter than one metre, accompanied by an adult, does not need an LRT ticket. This is a height condition, not a statement that all young children or everyone under 12 travels free. Check the children's heights, ages and documents before calculating the family's fare. Ask at the Customer Service Center if a case is unclear.
Service hours are not your station's last departure
The current published service hours for the three lines are 06:30–23:15 from Monday to Thursday, and 06:30–23:59 on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. The Taipa Line runs approximately every 5–10.5 minutes, with a full-line journey of about 28 minutes. The Hengqin and Seac Pai Van lines each run about every six minutes, with a full-line journey of about two minutes. These are line-level figures, not guaranteed hotel-to-attraction journey times.
For a late return, open the departure timetables on the network page and check your station, direction and any connecting line. Leave time to reach the station, obtain a ticket and change trains. Do not assume 23:59 is a last train you can catch from every platform, or that a two-minute branch journey requires only two minutes in your plan. Check the day's notices for holidays, weather or temporary changes.
Luggage, step-free needs and carriage etiquette
Whether a large case is manageable depends on the whole route: station entrances, lifts, walking connections and the destination. If you need step-free travel, check the relevant station facilities and lift availability. A rail route alone is not a guarantee of a step-free path from hotel door to platform. Contact the operator before travelling with unusual luggage or if assistance is required.

Keep cases secure beside you and clear of doors, aisles and wheelchair areas. Wait for doors to open fully and passengers to leave before boarding. The passenger rules prohibit eating, drinking and smoking in the paid area, and require an adult to accompany children shorter than one metre. A driverless train is not permission to operate emergency equipment without cause.

The LRT is also not an unlimited sightseeing ride on one single ticket. The published paid-area time limit is 60 minutes. Beyond that, an additional lowest adult single fare is normally charged for each 30 minutes, except where there is a justifiable reason or permission. Avoid repeated rides for photographs without leaving the paid area. Speak to staff if a delay or assistance need affects your journey.
Your pre-journey checklist
- Use the operating network, without adding the East Line or other proposed stations.
- Check the final walk; change at Lotus for Hengqin or Union Hospital for Seac Pai Van.
- Let the fare enquiry calculate your journey, including sea-crossing and Union Hospital rules.
- Confirm concession eligibility and the child's height rule, and carry supporting documents.
- Check the return station, direction and connections, including luggage and step-free needs.

Make it your journey
Choose an LRT segment that connects places you already want to visit, then allow time at both ends. Where the hotel or attraction does not fit the network, compare a bus, hotel shuttle or taxi so the transport serves the day you actually want.
