If you are staying around Sheung Wan or Central and travelling to Macau during the day, start by checking the ferries. If you are already near Hong Kong airport or Tung Chung, or need to travel late at night, the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macao Bridge shuttle, often called the Golden Bus, deserves a closer look. Include the connections at both ends: its HK$65 daytime fare covers the journey between the Hong Kong and Macau bridge ports, not a trip between your hotels.
Who this comparison is for
This guide compares city-terminal ferries and the public bridge shuttle, with information checked on 15 October 2026. It assumes you are eligible to enter both destinations and will complete the normal immigration formalities. Airside ferry transfers and restricted airport transfer buses have separate eligibility requirements and are outside this itinerary.
Know exactly which part of the journey you are buying
Read the full terminal names before booking. Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal in Sheung Wan is a different departure point from SkyPier Terminal at Hong Kong International Airport. Macau Outer Harbour Ferry Terminal and Taipa Ferry Terminal are also separate destinations. A ticket labelled simply “Hong Kong–Macau” may leave you on the wrong side of the city for your hotel.
The Golden Bus connects the bridge ports. It is a different product from a cross-boundary coach that picks up in the city and drops off at a specified hotel. Write out the shuttle journey as:
Hong Kong accommodation → Hong Kong bridge port → Macau bridge port → Macau destination.
Only the middle, cross-bridge leg is included in the shuttle fare. Arrange the local connections separately, and allow for immigration, waiting and walking with your luggage.

Compare fares—and the different meanings of “night service”
The table compares regular adult one-way fares departing Hong Kong in ordinary seating. Promotional discounts, local connections and additional luggage charges are excluded.
| Service | Weekday daytime | Weekend/public-holiday daytime | Night service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golden Bus: Hong Kong port to Macau port | HK$65 | HK$65 | HK$70 |
| Cotai Water Jet: Sheung Wan to Taipa, Cotai Class | HK$192 | HK$209 | HK$242 |
| TurboJET: Hong Kong–Macau, Economy Class | HK$194 | HK$212 | HK$242 |
TurboJET’s current offer terms also list those regular Economy Class fares. This comparison does not use the early-bird offer, which requires advance purchase and has departure-date restrictions.
For the Golden Bus, daytime means 06:00–23:59; the night fare applies from 00:00 to 05:59. Departures from the Macau port are priced in Macau patacas: MOP65 by day and MOP70 at night. See the operator’s fare table.
Ferry night fares begin much earlier, and the two companies use different rules. From October through January, Cotai Water Jet’s night period starts at 17:10; other months have different cut-offs. TurboJET lists Hong Kong–Macau sailings from 18:30 as night service. Do not assume that a sailing has a daytime fare just because it is still light outside. Check Cotai Water Jet’s fares and timetable and TurboJET’s current route information.
For two adults leaving Hong Kong on a weekday during the day, the bridge leg costs HK$130, compared with HK$384 for the Cotai Water Jet sailing. That difference is not necessarily your final saving. Add back a taxi to the bridge port or a longer onward connection in Macau. Cotai Water Jet also specifies Hong Kong dollars for sales in Hong Kong and patacas for sales in Macau, so keep the currencies separate when budgeting for a return trip.
Taking the Golden Bus: plan both local connections first
The shuttle is a good option if keeping transport costs down matters to you and you are comfortable changing vehicles. A normal journey works as follows:
- Reach the Hong Kong bridge port. From the Tung Chung MTR area, check B6/B6S connections. Travellers who have arrived at Hong Kong airport and cleared immigration can check B4. Some airport bus routes from the city also serve the port; check the actual stop and direction for your accommodation. The operator’s Hong Kong port transport page lists these options.
- Clear Hong Kong departure formalities and follow the Macau-line signs. Check that your ticket and boarding area are for Macau rather than Zhuhai. Keep documents and your phone accessible, and take your luggage through the formalities with you.
- Clear arrival immigration at the Macau port, then continue locally. The current port transport list includes route 101 through peninsula areas such as Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro and Avenida do Infante D. Henrique. Route 102 serves parts of Taipa and Cotai on its way to the Macau side of Hengqin Port. Choose by a stop near your actual hotel, rather than simply boarding a bus “to Macau”. Some hotels also run port shuttles; confirm their operating hours and boarding conditions. See the Macau port connection information.
The Golden Bus operates 24 hours. Published intervals are approximately 10–15 minutes during off-peak daytime periods and 15–30 minutes overnight. An interval is not a promise about the queue you will encounter. See the shuttle frequency table.
Recheck the local connections for a late journey. The Macau port list gives route 102’s hours as 06:00–00:00, so do not assume it will still take you to Cotai in the middle of the night. On the Hong Kong side, investigate the overnight NA-series airport buses serving the port, then confirm whether a particular route reaches your destination. A 24-hour bridge shuttle still requires a plan for each part of the hotel-to-hotel journey.

Taking a ferry: choose the arrival terminal before the sailing
From accommodation near Sheung Wan, reaching Hong Kong–Macau Ferry Terminal is often more direct than travelling out to the bridge port. For Macau’s historic peninsula, start by comparing sailings to Outer Harbour. For a Cotai hotel, look at Taipa first and then check the hotel connection. These are useful directions for planning, not guarantees: your exact hotel address and the sailings on sale for your date still decide the best option.
TurboJET gives an approximate crossing time of 60 minutes. That excludes the journey to the terminal, boarding formalities, arrival immigration and the final connection. The company advises allowing at least 30 minutes for boarding and document checks; this does not mean leaving your hotel half an hour before departure. If you are prone to seasickness, include that in the decision rather than comparing prices alone.
Check when a timetable takes effect. During our 15 October check, TurboJET displayed both an older timetable effective from 1 September and a new one effective from 16 October. The latter was not yet valid on the checking date; it is the relevant table for departures on or after the 16th. Cotai Water Jet also advertises extra sailings on specified dates. An extra service is not necessarily the last sailing every day. Consult the TurboJET timetable and Cotai Water Jet timetable for your travel date.

Extra checks for luggage, children and a late return
For large bags, check the carrier’s rules. A regular or concessionary Golden Bus ticket normally includes one free item of luggage no larger than 76 × 51 × 32 cm and no heavier than 20 kg. Extra luggage requires approval, and irregular items such as pushchairs have folding and space conditions. More large cases also mean more lifting at every connection and border crossing. For a ferry, consult that ferry company’s allowance; the shuttle’s limits do not apply to it. See the Golden Bus passenger rules.
For children, check age, height and seat use individually. Cotai Water Jet requires a valid ticket for children aged one or over. The Golden Bus’s free-child conditions involve age, height and not occupying a seat, so “young children travel free” is not a rule you can apply across both. Check every passenger before purchasing instead of discovering a ticket is missing at the gate.
For an evening event, plan the return before the outward journey. Allow separately for the expected finish, walking out, reaching the terminal or bridge port and completing formalities. Then choose a departure you can reasonably reach. The Golden Bus is one possible overnight option, but both local connections still need checking. Bad weather can affect buses as well as ferries, so read operator notices shortly before leaving.
The final choice is often straightforward: if both ends are convenient for ferry terminals and you are happy to work around a fixed sailing, check the ferry first. If you are near the airport or Tung Chung, want a lower cross-boundary fare, or need to travel overnight, investigate the Golden Bus. Writing down both local connections usually makes the better route much clearer.

Your pre-journey checklist
- Check documents and eligibility for Hong Kong, Macau and any return entry.
- Write down the local connection at each end, using your actual hotel address.
- Check fares, timetable effective dates and night-service cut-offs for your travel day.
- Check each child’s ticket requirements and measure luggage size, weight and quantity.
- Save return services, local connections and operator weather-notice links.

Make it your journey
List your accommodation, date and return window before comparing the complete journey. Start with a ferry when the terminals are convenient; investigate the Golden Bus near the airport or for overnight travel. The cross-boundary fare is only one part of the decision.
