The essentials

Broadway Cinematheque's BC30 anniversary programme runs from 8 October to 16 December 2026. This guide selects four repertory screenings between 5 November and 5 December: check the subtitles first, then choose by subject and runtime. A listed screening does not establish ticket availability. Details were checked on 3 November 2026; all times are Hong Kong local time.

Check the programme and the cinema, not just the film title

Eslite Hong Kong's official programme partnership announcement gives the dates and the “bc30 bc it's cinema” anniversary theme. Check individual screenings on Broadway Circuit's BC30 page . This is the Cinematheque's anniversary programme: dates, passes and venues belonging to a different film festival should not be carried across.

The venue is Broadway Cinematheque, Prosperous Garden, 3 Public Square Street, Yau Ma Tei, Kowloon, as listed on its official cinema page . Seeing “Broadway” in a booking result is not sufficient. Confirm CINEMATHEQUE, the date and the house. A search for an older film may return an earlier release elsewhere; that is not a reliable basis for a 2026 itinerary.

Four choices: one this week, three to plan ahead

These are the schedules shown by the cinema when checked. All four films are listed with Chinese and English subtitles. This article is not connected to live seat selection and does not reserve tickets. Recheck the session, classification, subtitles and availability before paying.

If you are in Hong Kong this week, Masayuki Suo's Shall We Dance offers the nearest date. A salaryman takes up ballroom dancing and finds an interest beyond his routine. It is a character-led choice rather than an intricate criminal investigation, but 136 minutes is still a substantial commitment. For a 17:10 start, plan dinner afterwards or eat earlier. This anniversary screening is the 1996 Japanese original, not the American remake.

The Secret in Their Eyes follows a retired judicial investigator revisiting an old case, bringing crime, memory and emotion together. Choose it if you want to follow a layered narrative. Its 19:20 start should discourage a tightly timed late cross-border connection afterwards. The 129-minute runtime is the film's duration, not a cinema promise of the time you will be outside.

Three Monkeys is shorter, but it is not a light comedy. After a driver takes responsibility for his employer's accident, concealment and strained family relationships develop. The 14:45 Saturday screening lends itself to an afternoon film followed by a discussion over dinner. Choose it for an interest in moral and psychological tension, not because the animal-related title suggests children's entertainment.

The Great Passage centres on a dictionary-making team at a publishing house. It may appeal to viewers interested in language, work and the difficulty of connecting with others. Its 133-minute Saturday-afternoon slot deserves an unhurried block of time. If a companion finds sustained subtitle reading tiring, one well-chosen film is a better plan than consecutive screenings.

Separate the ticket price from the booking fee

Each of these four sessions lists HKD100. Broadway's ticketing FAQ lists an online booking fee of HKD10 per ticket. A standard online purchase therefore works out at approximately HKD110 for one ticket or HKD220 for two, subject to checkout and any applicable conditions. Membership offers, redemption vouchers and other-session concessions are not automatically available to every visitor.

Non-members can book online. Check the date, session, house and seats before paying: the cinema generally does not refund or exchange tickets already sold. Do not buy a roughly suitable session on the assumption that staff will change it later. Save the confirmation email and valid admission QR code securely. Follow the actual order instructions for direct scanning or machine collection rather than assuming that paper collection is always necessary. Keep the QR code private.

Check the film classification while booking, too. Hong Kong Category III films admit only people aged 18 or above; accompanying parents do not remove that age restriction. This article does not infer the classification of individual films. If minors are travelling with you, check the chosen session and ask the cinema where clarification is needed.

Leave some space around your Yau Ma Tei visit

Treat the film as one of the day's main plans, rather than an indoor activity squeezed between attractions. For the 17:10 screening on 5 November, finish an early meal or a short neighbourhood walk first, leaving time to find the entrance, use the bathroom and settle into your seat. For a weekend-afternoon screening, avoid lunch reservations far across the city.

Arriving in the cinema's neighbourhood roughly 20–30 minutes early is a useful planning buffer, not a published latest-admission rule. It helps if you encounter a queue, rain or an unfamiliar entrance. Anyone with large luggage should arrange storage beforehand; a public lobby is not a confirmed luggage-storage service.

Allow time after the film as well. Runtime does not cover leaving the auditorium, using the bathroom, collecting stored items or walking to a pickup point. If travelling to an airport or border crossing after an evening screening, check operating hours and a separate travel buffer. For a taxi, the Hong Kong taxi guide explains the basics. Do not assume a vehicle can wait indefinitely directly outside the cinema.

Subtitle stamina matters more than adding another film

Chinese and English subtitles are listed for these selections, but viewers still need to read continuously. Familiarity with the original language, fatigue and comfort with difficult subject matter can matter more to the outing than a film's awards. For a group, let each person identify a preferred film before finding a date that works for everyone.

Sort out phones, conversations and bags before the screening starts. Keep bright screens off during the film and avoid filming or repeated trips in and out. Save the discussion for the walk or meal afterwards. The illustrations here depict planning and viewing preparation; use the actual venue for its entrance, lobby and equipment layout.

Your pre-journey checklist

  • Check the 2026 session, Cinematheque venue and house; disregard obsolete release listings.
  • Confirm subtitles, runtime, classification and each companion's comfort with the subject.
  • Use the cinema's seat selection for availability; standard online booking adds HKD10 per ticket.
  • Keep the confirmation email and valid QR code private and accessible.
  • Plan food, luggage and onward travel separately; runtime is not an exact exit time.
