Choose the shape of your Lamma Island day before choosing a restaurant. For a gentler outing, walk from Yung Shue Wan to Hung Shing Yeh Beach and return the same way. Continue over the hilly family trail to Sok Kwu Wan only if everyone is comfortable with the walking and you have checked the return ferry. This itinerary assumes you are already at Yung Shue Wan at about 10:00. Add the journey to Central, waiting for the ferry and travel after returning separately; avoid squeezing the island walk between a flight and a border connection.
Two piers make two different days
Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan are both on Lamma Island, but they are different boarding points. The ferry operator's pier information identifies Central Pier 4 for both routes. On the island, Yung Shue Wan Pier serves Central, while the Central service at Sok Kwu Wan uses Pier 2. Check the destination before boarding and the village you are returning from, rather than asking only for “the Lamma ferry”.
The main walk here is Yung Shue Wan—Hung Shing Yeh Beach—the hilly family trail—Sok Kwu Wan. The Tourism Board's laid-back Lamma guide describes the connecting family walk as taking about 90 minutes. That gives a sense of the walk's scale, not your whole outing: meals, beach stops, photographs, rest, waiting for boats and individual walking speeds need extra time.
“Family trail” does not mean level throughout. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department's directions to its Lamma campsite explicitly describe uphill approaches from both ends. We suggest leaving half a day or longer for the island part of the full itinerary. This is planning space, not an official completion time. For older relatives unused to slopes, very young children or a pushchair, the shorter return walk is easier to adjust.

Before leaving: plan the return first
Checked on 21 October 2026, the Yung Shue Wan timetable and Sok Kwu Wan timetable both show arrangements effective from 1 April 2026. They state that the published times are pier gate-closing times. They are not the times to join the back of the queue. Allow separately for finding the pier, tickets or payment, waiting and gathering your group.
For example, both the Monday–Saturday and Sunday/public-holiday tables currently list regular Sok Kwu Wan departures for Central at 16:05 and 17:35. We use 16:05 below as a reference target after a comfortable walk, with 17:35 as the next regular service to check if you need more time. Neither is a reservation or boarding guarantee; weather, operational changes and capacity can affect travel. Holiday sailings marked “@” are optional departures, so do not make one your only way back.
If you must reach a hotel, airport or border checkpoint by a particular time, work backwards through the journey after the ferry before deciding whether to cross the island. With a flight or border transfer later that day, choosing another day for Lamma is usually the less pressured option.

Wear footwear suited to paved slopes and carry water, a sun hat, a small snack and a charged phone. Keep the bag light and leave suitcases at a suitable storage location. Food outlets in a village do not mean supplies are always available along the hillside. Check the weather and the operator's temporary notices before setting out.
Around 10:00: begin slowly in Yung Shue Wan
The sample schedule starts after disembarking, not when leaving your hotel. Locate Yung Shue Wan Pier and the return direction, then follow the village's main street. Everyday movement between shops, places to eat and homes is part of the interest. Keep residents' and delivery workers' paths clear when taking photographs, and avoid stopping suddenly at narrow corners.
There is no need to queue at several places simply to try everything. Start with breakfast or a light snack if needed, then choose one or two stops that appeal. Ask the business directly about special diets, children's food or allergens; menus, prices and hours in older features are not a promise about today.
Follow local signs towards Hung Shing Yeh Beach and check your map at junctions. An easy stroll through the village does not establish that the remaining walk to Sok Kwu Wan has the same terrain.
Hung Shing Yeh Beach: pause and choose whether to continue
Leave time to sit and look at the sea. This itinerary uses the beach as a rest stop; it does not include a full swimming session, changing and drying off. If swimming is a priority, check current beach conditions, water quality and lifeguard arrangements separately, and reduce the subsequent walking. Passing a beach does not make a swim essential to the day.
Check three things before continuing: whether everyone wants to tackle the slopes, whether you have enough water, and how much time remains before the intended ferry. If any is unsatisfactory, return along the approach to Yung Shue Wan, eat in the village and take the ferry to Central. That is one of the planned versions of the day, not an unfinished sightseeing list.

If considering the full route, check lunch and the return target together here. When lunchtime is already approaching, a child is tired or the weather is oppressive, a restaurant in the other village is not a good reason to press on. With energy and time in hand, resume after the break and follow signs for Sok Kwu Wan.
Late morning into afternoon: leave room for the hilly section
The operator's walking-route description links Hung Shing Yeh Beach, the tree-planting pavilion area, Lo So Shing School, the Sok Kwu Wan Tin Hau Temple and the pier. Enjoy how the bays sit among the hills without turning every branch path, pavilion and temple into a compulsory stop.

The photograph shows one part of the paved trail. It does not establish that the entire route has no steps or exposed stretches, or suits every pushchair. Keep to your own pace and rest without obstructing others. At an uncertain junction, stop to check the direction rather than hurrying uphill to catch the group. Visitors needing more mobility assistance may prefer Yung Shue Wan village and nearby waterfront areas, after checking access at the pier and on their chosen route.
This itinerary does not detour to Lamma Winds. Some older features still include the turbine as a standard stop, but the operator's current attractions page explicitly marks Lamma Winds as permanently closed. An icon on an old route graphic is not a reason to add the uphill detour. We also keep the separate family trail north from Yung Shue Wan towards Pak Kok out of this southbound walk.
In Sok Kwu Wan: find the pier before lunch
On reaching the village, locate Pier 2, the timetable for Central and current notices before choosing a place to eat. You can then enjoy lunch without repeatedly searching the waterfront for the exit afterwards. A brief temple stop can fit if access and local etiquette permit, but neither lunch nor sightseeing needs to become a minute-by-minute assignment.

For seafood, establish the pricing unit, weight and preparation or additional charges before confirming the table's budget. If someone does not eat seafood, check the menu together for suitable cooked or vegetarian options. Restaurant shuttles, meal-package boats and the public ferry are different services. A restaurant advertising a boat does not automatically replace your planned ferry: confirm eligibility, destination, time and any booking requirement.
For the example 16:05 departure, we suggest finishing the meal and heading towards the pier around 15:30, leaving time to check arrangements and queue. This is a cautious itinerary choice, not a universal advance-arrival requirement published by the operator. If the meal or walk takes longer, check the next sailing promptly instead of trying to recover the day's accumulated delay with a final sprint.
Adjusting for rain, a late start or less walking
If arriving at Yung Shue Wan in the afternoon, favour the short return walk. Do not compress a morning village visit, beach break, cross-island walk and Sok Kwu Wan lunch into the hours before dusk. With persistent rain, thunderstorms or weather warnings, consult our Hong Kong and Macau severe-weather guide and current official information before deciding whether to postpone. Being able to eat near the pier does not establish that continuing over the hills is sensible.
For another island day focused on a village and its public-transport connections, compare our Tai O one-day itinerary . Its choices concern buses, time in the village and whether to add Ngong Ping. Lamma's central choice is different: return from the same pier, or walk to the other side for the ferry home.
Your pre-journey checklist
- Choose the short return to Yung Shue Wan or the one-way walk to Sok Kwu Wan first.
- Use Central Pier 4 for departure and Sok Kwu Wan Pier 2 for the return to Central.
- Published ferry times are gate-closing times; allow extra time for payment, queues and your group.
- The approximate 90-minute walking description excludes your meals, stops and ferry wait.
- Reassess energy, water, weather and the ferry plan after resting at Hung Shing Yeh Beach.
- Omit permanently closed Lamma Winds and check restaurant boats separately from public ferries.

Make it your journey
For a Hong Kong hotel, airport or cross-border connection, establish an approximate return time to Central before arranging the city meeting point. Leave separate allowances for walking on the island, waiting for the ferry and meeting your driver in town.
